What is acne?

There are up to 5,000 oil glands found on the face. Acne is inflammation of these sebaceous glands. The sebaceous glands are most plentiful and active on the face, neck, back, and chest. The excess oil or sebum blocks the hair follicles and pores, and the bacteria builds up and inflammation occurs. Acne happens when the amount and/or quality of the oil secreted by the glands become abnormal.

Acne is ongoing inflammation of the sebaceous glands. Cyst acne is the most damaging physically and emotionally. Cysts are infections below the skin. Corynebacterium acne is usually responsible for the secondary infection, which often times causes deep tissue scarring. The cysts are very painful to the touch.

Less painful and less harmful kinds of skin eruptions include blackheads, whiteheads, and papules, which are red hard areas of inflammation caused by a blockage of the sebaceous duct. These conditions are often found in adolescents and often do not stop there, as is usually believed. Acne, closely related to hormone activity, can stay with afflicted women until their early forties or until after menopause.
