Different theories offer different remedies for acne

Nutrition

If acne could be cured simply by eliminating sugar, chocolate, white flour, dairy, wheat, meat, etc., I don’t think you would see too many women with breakouts. I know you wouldn’t see me ever again with a blemish, because I would consider that a very small price to pay for clear skin.

Lack of sufficient essential fatty acids can cause all kinds of skin problems, including acne and eczema in addition to thin hair and flaky scalp. It is said that taking supplemental EFAs may not always be effective if the EFAs are inhibited by insufficient vitamins B6 and C or magnesium or zinc. Taking all with primrose oil with zinc has helped some suffers with the problem.

Toxins

Many, many, many people say acne is caused by toxins being released from the body. This could be the case for some people. I just doubt it in the hundreds of women I talk to who work out and steam daily, shop wisely, and are vegan.

The liver’s contribution

Liver-cleansing herbs can often be helpful in clearing up hormonal related acne because the liver metabolizes estrogen, it can cause premenstrual syndrome (PMS), acne, and irritation. If the liver cannot process testosterone, it can also cause acne, increased sexual energy, and aggressive mood swings. Follow the instructions under the detox section, if this may be the case.

The sebaceous glands process the nutrients from the bloodstream. They take substances from the blood, which come from the diet, and utilize the fatty acids as secretion that is sebum, the theory being that the fats taken into the body determine the quality of fat in the blood and used in the sebum. Some say that if it is sticky, it creates a sticking of red blood cells, causing a decrease in their ability to bind and transport oxygen to the cells in the body. It can cause the sebaceous gland to have a stickier sebum that cannot get through the hair follicles and causes blockages. When the oil is sticky, it cannot flow freely, and the cells can plug the movement of oil to the surface, therefore causing an eruption.

Infections

We know that acne is caused by infections, and we know that the deep scarring acne, which we really want to avoid, is an infection, and we know that antibiotics will temporarily help clear up acne. But is there a natural equivalent? Many believe garlic and vinegar help. Topically, tea tree oil and lavender are the answer.

To control the potential infections that can take place after a breakout, take “herbal antibiotics” such as garlic, purple coneflower, and wild indigo. Daily dosages of vitamin C can also aid your body in fighting infections.

The part stress can play

Stress, of course, can create or aggravate any health problem. This is where you need to take a good look at your life. Are you happy? Why? Why not? What is causing you stress? Can you begin taking steps to improve or change the situation? Maybe you can start to take small steps to improve the situation today. (See chapter on Happiness.)
